Alaska was the 49th state in the USA; it became a state on January 3, 1959. It is nicknamed The Last Frontier. The state capital is Juneau and the largest city is Anchorage. With area coverage of 656,425 square miles [Alaska is the biggest state in the USA] with a population of 626,932 (as of 2000). Residents are called Alaskans and the major Industry is oil (petroleum). The major rivers of Alaska are the Yukon River, Kuskokwim River, Colville River, and Copper River. The major lakes are Iliamna Lake, Aleknagik Lake, Becharof Lake, Clark Lake, and Minchumina Lake. The highest point is Mt. McKinley - 20,320 feet (6,194 m) above sea level making it the highest point in the USA.
The name Alaska is from the Aleut Indian word "alaxsxaq" or "agunalaksh" that mean the mainland or shore. The state motto is "North To The Future"
